Two common paths

Original Medicare + Medigap or Medicare Advantage?

Neither path is automatically right for everyone. The better fit depends on your circumstances and priorities.

ConsiderationOriginal Medicare + MedigapMedicare Advantage
How coverage worksOriginal Medicare remains primary; a Medigap policy can help with certain out-of-pocket costs.A private Medicare-approved plan provides your Part A and Part B benefits.
Provider accessGenerally any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare, subject to your coverage.Provider networks and plan rules may apply, depending on plan type.
Prescription drugsUsually requires a separate Part D plan if you want drug coverage. Many Medicare Advantage plans include Part D drug coverage.
CostsUsually includes a separate Medigap premium plus Part B and any Part D premium.Premiums and cost sharing vary by plan; plans have an annual limit on Part A/B out-of-pocket costs.
Best next stepCompare your actual doctors, prescriptions, travel habits and budget—not just one headline benefit.

General comparison only. Availability, underwriting/guaranteed-issue rights, costs and plan rules vary.

Common questions

Get a quick answer, then decide whether you want to talk.

When can I change a Medicare Advantage plan?

Medicare’s yearly Open Enrollment Period runs October 15–December 7. If you’re already in a Medicare Advantage plan, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1–March 31. Special Enrollment Periods may also apply to certain life events.

Do I need Part D if I don’t take prescriptions?

Going 63 days or more without Medicare drug coverage or other creditable prescription coverage after you’re eligible can lead to a late-enrollment penalty later. Review your existing coverage before deciding.

Can I have both Medicare Advantage and Medigap?

No. Medigap supplements Original Medicare. It does not work with Medicare Advantage to pay Medicare Advantage copayments or deductibles.

What should I bring to a Medicare review?

Your Medicare card if you have one, current coverage information, a list of doctors and prescriptions, preferred pharmacies, and any questions about expected healthcare or travel.
